One of the frustrating thing about this hobby is that it's hard to see other peoples work. Downloading a clip or purchasing a VHS transfer is ok but I would love to see some well done super 8mm projected on the big screen and would like to start a contest and festival here in the midwest USA. Do you think there would be any interest? A annual event with some prize money available. I suppose it would be more successful if categorys were available for Video and 16mm as long as video began as film or is predominately shot on film. The big issue would be sponsorship. I think I could get community support if I thought it would generate at least enough quality productions to fill a days screenings. What do you folks think? Any chance this might work?

I pitched Super-8 Sound on the idea, they weren't against it...but they don't have the time to be involved.

Perhaps (and I mean only perhaps) they would offer some type of sponsorship in exchange for promotion.

There are festivals all over that accept films originating on S-8 but I don't know of any that are strictly Super-8...might be a cool thing to get going if you have the time and energy.
The Chicago Underground Film Festival is having their annual event in August. The last day to get a film in is tomorrow.
    Check them out at:

I submitted my S-8 short on Friday...wish me luck!

    Hey Roy,

    >like to start a contest and festival here
    >in the midwest USA

I live in Cincinnati so I say go for it! I'm in the process of making a film and plan to shoot in about 3 weeks. Since I've never done anything on super8 before, I'd only want to submit it if it didn't suck.

As for interest I think there probably would be some, but it would probably work best if it was put on in a centralized bigger city in the midwest, like Chicago.

    >predominately shot on film.

I know that al lot of festivals are the same way that they only accept movies that originated on film, I'm guessing to try to keep from being overloaded with video entries. You probably would be more succesful allowing a originating on video catergory.

I'm sure there probably are a couple of festivals somewhere in the midwest, I know flicker has a few spread across the country.

    Good luck,
    Scott U.
